Must Have Back to School Items that you WON’T Find on Any School Supply List

Updated: Aug 15, 2022

It’s back to school season and two of the three are back in the classroom. This year represents a relatively normal school year for the first time in 2 years. As I was preparing the “big” little Lees to head back to school full time, I wanted to make sure they were as prepared as possible for whatever might come their way.

Allowing the kids to have these items on hand is sure to reduce those nuisance calls from the school for minor issues, which is HUGE!

Life happens. Everything is an emergency to kids.

For girls, it’s essential that they learn to carry an “emergency kit”, especially as they enter puberty. When I was young, an unexpected visitor would lead to an anxious trip to the school nurse and a call home. The nurse probably has the basic supplies, but in most cases they aren’t equipped to deal with all the challenges that arise in that situation in a way that’s discreet and comfortable. It’s nerve wracking enough without having to deal with telling a stranger what is going on, let alone not to have familiarity with the feminine products stocked.

Boys have emergencies too.

For boys, a supply kit may not be essential, but it sure is nice. I originally was going to make one for Moriah only, but I didn’t want him to feel left out. Also, I was tired of picking my son up from school looking unloved after recess, PE, art class, and lunch. He would come home smelly, ashy, burnt from the sun, covered in dirt, and just an overall mess. He looked nothing like the boy I dropped off at school. Having these items to pull himself back together has increased his confidence and reduced the number of calls I get from school (hallelujah!).

Let the kids make it their own.

I let them both pick out the pouch that would contain the supplies and shop for the supplies themselves. A good place to start is the “travel” isle at the drugstore or any major grocery chain.

What’s in Moriah’s bag:

Hair ties

Chapstick

Clean underwear

Feminine wipes

Toilet wipes

Sanitary napkins

Panty liners

Hand sanitizer

Clorox Wipes

Lotion

Deodorant

Sunscreen

Stain remover stick

Travel toothbrush

What’s in Patrick‘s Bag:

Chapstick

Hand sanitizer

Clorox wipes

Lotion

Toilet wipes

Stain remover stick

Sunscreen

Deodorant

Travel Toothbrush

It’s never too early to expect the unexpected.

I remind Moriah monthly to replenish any supplies that may have been utilized. Patrick’s bag lasts all year long but I periodically remind him that it’s there to make sure he doesn’t forget about it. What do you think of the items that they packed? Do you prepare an emergency kit for your kids? Let me know if I missed any items!
